Originally known as Newban, the group was founded by three brothers—David, Wayne, and Jonathan Lewis—alongside other talented musicians including Sharon Bryant, Porter Carroll Jr., and Clifford Archer. Their early music blended funk, soul, and disco influences, and they gained initial recognition with their self-titled debut album in 1978, featuring the hit "Stand Up."
