Atlantic Starr is an American R&B and soul band formed in 1976 in White Plains, New York. Originally known as Newban, the group was founded by three brothers—David, Wayne, and Jonathan Lewis—alongside other talented musicians including Sharon Bryant, Porter Carroll Jr., and Clifford Archer. Their early music blended funk, soul, and disco influences, and they gained initial recognition with their self-titled debut album in 1978, featuring the hit "Stand Up."

In 1982, Atlantic Starr released the album Brilliance, which featured the hit single "Circles." The song became one of their most successful tracks, peaking high on the R&B and dance charts. "Circles" showcased the band’s skillful mix of smooth vocals, rhythmic grooves, and polished production. The album also included other standout songs like "Love Me Down," further establishing the group as a key player in the soul and funk scene of the early '80s.

The band’s 1985 album As the Band Turns marked a new era with the addition of lead vocalist Barbara Weathers. It featured the ethereal and much-loved track "Silver Shadow," which became a fan favorite and a defining moment in the group’s discography. That same period also delivered the crossover hit "Secret Lovers," followed by the chart-topping ballad "Always" in 1987—solidifying Atlantic Starr’s legacy as masters of romantic R&B.

In May 2026, Atlantic Starr will bring their timeless sound to the Portugal Soul Weekender, a vibrant five-day celebration of soul music held in the stunning coastal setting of Monte Gordo, Praia Verde. Fans can expect to be taken on a nostalgic journey through their classic hits like "Circles," "Silver Shadow," and "Always," as the group continues to share their feel-good grooves and soulful harmonies with audiences around the world.
